Early Life

Sharon Cuneta was born on January 6, 1966 Santa Mesa, Manila, in the Philippines. Sharon’s father, Pablo Cuneta, was a former Pasay mayor and was also the longest-serving Mayor of the Philippines from 1951 to 1988. 

Meanwhile, the majority of Sharon’s acting and singing traits can be traced back to her mother, Elaine, who was the sister of renowned actress and singer Helen Gamboa. Sharon’s musical journey started right from her early days when she was growing up in the San Lorenzo Village listening to her dad’s music collection. 

Sharon’s mother, Elaine Gamboa, too had an eye for music and was hereself a Piano major studying over at the UST’s conservatory of music. All this inspired Sharon to take up piano lessons and guitar classes at a young age. At the age of three, Sharon had already started accompanying her aunt, Helen Gamboa during her tapings for different TV shows.

Thanks to her father’s rich music collection and her mother’s Piano major, the seeds of Sharon’s career were sown pretty early in her life. Taking up after her mother, Sharon took intensive piano lessons which laid down the foundation of her musical training and helped her gain much-needed exposure at a very young age. 

Her aunt, Helen Gamboa, was a famous personality within the industry circle and helped her get in touch with the right people. Sharon’s first stint in showbiz came through her TV appearance on Ike Lozada’s show wherein she lip-synced and mimicked her aunt’s songs for the show. 

Following that, Sharon was roped in her first movie Lovers For Hire starring Rosanna Ortiz and George Estregan. Sharon’s uncle, Tito Sotto, was the Vice-President of Vicor Records which was a renowned music house back in the day. On January 12, 1978, a young Sharon Cuneta made her first visit to Vicor Records. This was her first big break wherein recorded her first single titled Tawag Ng Pag-Ibig under the careful supervision of her uncle, Tito Sotto. 

As promised, Sotto produced the song shortly after which Cuneta found herself on TV promoting her very own song for the first time on the hit TV show Discorama. By 1980, Cuneta was already a big success which is when she got another golden opportunity to record her very first George Canesco song titled “Tubig At Langis.” The song went on to become a hit title of the movie by the same name. 

Soon after enjoying success in the music industry, Sharon Cuneta bagged her first feature “Dear Heart” alongside her first husband Gabby Concepcion. The film turned out to be a huge hit and paved the way for all her future endeavours.
